Food Safety & Community Safety

We want every Baghza exchange to feel good — safe food, kind neighbors, and no weird situations. Here’s what we think every neighbor should know.

Food Safety

Simple rules for happy, healthy eating

🚿

Wash everything — always

Even homegrown, pesticide-free produce picks up dirt, bacteria, and critters during harvest and transit. Rinse all fruits and vegetables under cool running water before eating, even if you plan to peel them. If you’re getting leafy greens, give them a good soak and a second rinse.
⚠️

Allergies — always ask first

If you have food allergies — nuts, gluten, stone fruit, latex-related allergies, or anything else — ask the neighbor directly before accepting any food. Baghza cannot verify ingredients, cross-contamination, or preparation methods. A quick message before pickup can make all the difference. Your safety is worth the extra text.
🌱

What Baghza cannot verify

We’re a platform, not a food inspector. Here’s what we genuinely cannot confirm:

  • Whether produce has been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, or other chemicals — even if the poster says it hasn’t
  • Whether items were stored at safe temperatures or kept away from cross-contamination
  • Whether food is free of common allergens like tree nuts, gluten, or dairy
  • The shelf life or freshness of any item at the time of pickup

This isn’t meant to scare you — most neighbors are genuinely wonderful and careful. But you know your body best.

👃

Trust your senses

You’ve got great instincts. If produce looks slimy, smells off, has unusual spots or mold, or just feels wrong — don’t eat it. No social pressure, no wasted money, no embarrassment. Just toss it.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Pickup tips for smart neighbors

🌞

Meet in public or on your porch

For a first pickup with someone you’ve never met, keep it simple and visible. A porch handoff, a front walkway, or a public spot like a park entrance all work great. You never have to go inside someone’s home — and you should never feel pressured to.
👥

Bring a friend or give someone a heads up

It never hurts to tell a friend or family member where you’re going for a first pickup. A quick “Hey, I’m grabbing some tomatoes from a neighbor on Oak Street, back in 20” is all it takes. Most pickups are totally uneventful — but it’s a good habit with anyone new.
🚫

No pressure, ever

You can cancel a trade at any time with no explanation needed. If something feels off before or during a pickup, trust that feeling. Your safety always comes first — no tomatoes are worth a bad situation.
